Recognizing Western’s most notable graduates is a longstanding tradition. Established three decades ago, these awards represent the most prestigious honors WWU bestows on alumni.
The Western Washington University Alumni Association Board of Directors has established awards in several categories to honor alumni of Western who personify the university’s tradition of excellence, thereby bringing distinction to themselves and their alma mater through their
achievements, contributions to society and service to Western. These annual awards included the Distinguished Alumnus, Lifetime Achievement and Alumnus of the Century.
In 2007, the board expanded the recognition adding a Distinguished Alumnus Award for each college; the Young Alumnus of the Year Award to acknowledge alumni under the age of 40; and the Legacy Family of the Year Award to honor a family with a strong multi-generational affinity for Western Washington University.
The Larry “Go Vikings!” Taylor Alumni Service Award also was created in 2007 in memory of undoubtedly one of the most passionate advocates for Western, Larry Taylor (’72). His infectious charm, love for life and years of continued leadership and service to Western Washington University will live on in our community for generations to come.
This award recognizes an alumnus who has made a significant impact over an extended period of time of outstanding service and a commitment to the betterment of the Alumni Association and Western Washington University.
Of the estimated 100,000 living graduates of Western, we are proud to have recognized 167 through these prestigious awards.
